Donation advances Bolt for the Heart’s goal of placing 800 lifesaving AEDs with IMPD

CARMEL, Ind. — Bolt for the Heart presented 12 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department during a special ceremony held Thursday, August 27, at Hotel Carmichael in Carmel.
The NCAA originally purchased the AEDs for use during its March Madness basketball tournament to help protect athletes, staff and spectators. After the tournament, the NCAA donated the 12 devices to Bolt for the Heart, which then placed them with IMPD as part of the nonprofit organization’s goal of providing the department with 800 AEDs.
IMPD Chief Terry and Sergeant William Young joined Bolt for the Heart’s Executive Board to accept the donation and recognize the organizations whose partnership made it possible.
“On behalf of the women and men of IMPD, I want to extend our sincere thanks to Bolt for the Heart and the NCAA for this generous donation,” said William Young, IMPD Executive Officer-PIO. “These AEDs will give our officers an important lifesaving tool when every second matters. We are grateful for the continued partnership and commitment to keeping our community safe.”
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere and without warning. Because IMPD officers are often among the first people to arrive during an emergency, having AEDs immediately available in their vehicles can significantly reduce the time between cardiac arrest and lifesaving intervention.
“All of us at Bolt for the Heart are incredibly appreciative of the donation of 12 AEDs we received from the NCAA,” said Pierre Twer, president and founder of Bolt for the Heart. “The NCAA purchased these units for use during the March Madness basketball tournament and generously donated them to us following the event. We were honored to place them with IMPD as we continue pursuing our goal of providing the department with 800 AEDs.”
“It was great to have Chief Terry and Sergeant Young join us for our board meeting,” Twer continued. “IMPD does tremendous work and is in great hands under Chief Terry’s leadership. Thank you again to the NCAA for thinking of Bolt for the Heart and allowing us to find a meaningful home for these AEDs. A life will be saved.”
The donation reflects the shared commitment of the NCAA, Bolt for the Heart and IMPD to strengthening cardiac emergency preparedness throughout Central Indiana. By placing AEDs directly into police vehicles, officers can begin lifesaving treatment during the critical minutes before additional emergency medical personnel arrive.
